EU citizens
EU citizens live in Italy freely. After three months you register with the municipality (iscrizione anagrafica), showing income and health cover.

Non-EU citizens
A home on its own does not give the right to live in Italy. For people who will not work there is the elective residence visa: it needs stable passive income and accommodation, and a bought or long-let home counts towards the latter.

Visa-free, up to 90 days
If your country has Schengen visa-free travel, you can stay in your home for up to 90 days in any 180. Rules differ by country, so check with the Italian consulate before you buy.
